This seminar will define and explore the topic of “self-intimacy” as a doorway into formative and embodiment processes. Our primary focus will be interactive and verbal, although there will also be selected hands-on practices in order to demonstrate ways to integrate the two. We will use the tools of Formative Embodiment (FE) to disassemble behaviours and attitudes that no longer work for us and our clients, and to reassemble ourselves in more fulfilling and integrated ways. FE is inspired by Formative Psychology, the work of Stanley Keleman, and also draws extensively from the fields of Craniosacral Biodynamics and Polarity Therapy. Participants will learn new skills that can be directly integrated into clinical practice.

Self-intimacy can be experienced directly in the body as subtle rhythmic forces, such as the Long and Fluid Tides described in Craniosacral Biodynamics, or the vital pulsatory experiences of a number of other somatic and energy-based therapies. These generate some of the deepest, most personal healing experiences that we can experience in therapy, and can put us in touch with human qualities that are deeply enriching. Another element of self-intimacy and self-forming are the stories that we tell ourselves and others about our lives and experiences, but often in a frustrating, obsessive, or self-sabotaging manner. These stories may be about our relationships, successes or failures, traumatic episodes, family and parental issues, and much more, and they often elude our attempts to contain and get hold of our own minds and actions in effective ways.

Working with our rhythms and stories can lead to stable changes in our evolving self-image, in our behaviour, our health and in our approaches to life challenges and problems that provide ever more constructive and satisfying ways to live, work, love and play. Engaging with these processes can be deeply transformative and life-changing.
