* TRANSFERENCE AND COUNTERTRANSFERENCE: PERSONAL AND RELATIONAL DYNAMICS FROM A SOMATIC AND BIODYNAMIC PERSPECTIVE *

JANUARY 30TH-FEBRUARY 2ND 2020

WITH DR. JIM FEIL D.C., R.P.T., B.C.S.T.

Working in therapy, as well as in teams, groups or communities, is a direct invitation to the expression and experience of what is called ‘transference and countertransference’. The assumption underlying transference and countertransference is that individual and group encounters re-enact, recapitulate or evoke the scripts of one’s family of origin, including prenatal, birth, or other early socialization experiences. We see our environment through the filter of our own personal histories. As a result, personal and therapeutic interactions activate all sorts of interactive processes, both intra- and interpersonal, which reflect the unconscious assimilation of selected aspects of previous life experience. Having participants oriented to these possibilities is critical in developing an effective personal therapy or team unit, one that can manage effectively its primary tasks and continue to evolve and mature.

This workshop will provide a simple yet highly practical view of transference and countertransference, not so much from a psychotherapeutic framework, but from an operative, everyday, biodynamic and somatically oriented point of view. Its intention will be to help participants appreciate how difficult dynamics can surface in any therapeutic encounter. The workshop will also identify how to be effective and fully contributing members within a team or community setting, avoiding very common pitfalls. We will identify various behavioural and feeling markers that can help us recognize the presence of projective processes. We will provide explorations, activities and practices, including table work, to help bring these unconscious layers and filters into the awareness of the individual and the group. The relationship of transference and countertransference as aspects of traumatic complexes will also be identified.
